Quantum Entanglement

About the talk

On May 13, Norman is going to give a talk on Entanglement — one of the deepest mysteries of the quantum world. Many years ago, he spoke to our group on math and music and has a great gift for presenting these topics in a unique, entertaining and accessible manner.

Norman's own description: “Locality is the very reasonable principle that something that happens far away cannot have an immediate effect on what is happening here. Entanglement is a quantum physics phenomenon which violates the locality principle. The main goal of this talk is to formulate and present this situation more precisely. Entanglement has been measured and confirmed many times in labs around the world, and is in complete agreement with the mathematics of quantum physics. Nonetheless, the mechanism whereby entanglement occurs remains a mystery — not surprisingly, due to the violation of locality. In this talk, mathematics is used sparingly, never much beyond the high school level.”
