About the talk
A session on drug-resistant bacteria and fungi — and, delivered in late February 2020, on COVID-19, which was then only beginning to spread.
The session was planned as a talk on antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi. In the weeks before it, as the first coronavirus cases appeared, Dr. Goldfarb wrote to Ray: “I have been a bit swamped with all the coronavirus issues that have come up. I'm wondering if you think it might actually make sense to change topics to discuss the current 2019-novel coronavirus outbreak? Perhaps a title would be: 2019 novel Coronavirus — A pandemic in the making?” — with the objective of reviewing the global responses to respiratory virus outbreaks, including the recently identified coronavirus. Three weeks later, the World Health Organization declared the pandemic.
