Bill's work is at the centre of a current debate on whether analogies are valid for scientific modelling. Bill came up with an analogy to black holes, being sonic black holes. The question is whether the analogy is representative of what is occurring in the real world. Ray recommended the Quanta Magazine article on sonic black holes, which relies heavily on Bill's work — adding: “One can easily extrapolate to the analogies used for drug testing in animals. Researchers assume their work on animals is likely to have application to humans — frequently not the case, and often due to wrong assumptions.”
