About the talk
The world is at a cross-road… Responding to this current and existential crisis, we are fortunate indeed to have Andrew as a guest. Andrew is highly experienced in world politics from his years of diplomacy, including his 30-year career with the EU. Andrew will speak about global power rivalries and the European Union's place (or, sadly, absence?)… The member states of NATO and the EU have responded to Trump's threat to annex Greenland and his threats to increase tariffs. Though Trump has withdrawn some of his threats, the bond of trust between the US and Europe alongside many other countries is forever broken. Andrew will present his perspective on the EU, Canada and US, in these troubled times.
Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition. … Great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons, tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.

Andrew's professional career began in 1976 working in the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) government, followed by positions in the International Labour Organisation in Geneva, the UN Population Fund in Bangladesh and a USAID-funded position in India. In 1986 he joined the European Union, with assignments in India, China, Pakistan, Costa Rica and Brussels, before being appointed EU Ambassador in Bolivia, subsequently in Israel, and in 2013 as EU Ambassador to Mexico. He received his B.A. in History of Art from the University of Cambridge and Master's in International Relations from Columbia.
